Great historical fiction focused on Egypt in a time of revolution and growing conflicts with Israel while Hollywood descends on Egypt for the making of The Ten Commandments. Excellent character development especially of Ali, a young man caught up in both politics and the film production who later tells his life story to his grandson.Great historical fiction focused on Egypt in a time of revolution and growing conflicts with Israel while Hollywood descends on Egypt for the making of The Ten Commandments. I really enjoyed this atmospheric mystery from Sweden. The small town and it's residents were so well drawn, I could have given directions around town and introduced you to a few people! The murder in the small town is set against the bigger picture of the assassination of the Prime Minister in 1986. Always so much history to be learned from fiction!I really enjoyed this atmospheric mystery from Sweden. Powerful historical fiction about the government's involvement in the forced sterilization of brown and black women. The character development brings these women's stories to life. Not the easiest read, but well worth the effort.

A beautiful story of family, grief, immigration and food. Zauner's frank writing about her mother's illness and death is painful but impossible to put down. I don't know what possessed me to pick this up to read as a break from pandemic/election stress; but I'm glad I did.
