The opening segment of the first episode was too distressing for me to even get past the first few minutes. Probably best for those whose life lacks adequate occasion for schadenfreude.

Series 2 is based on books 1, 4 and 6 of the Kurt Wallander series written by Henning Mangkell and of course as expected liberties were made with the adaptation . Wallander of the books is a Swede but the films of BBC although filmed in…

Some touching scenes and lines in this one. Sir Kenneth Branagh: “I was a crap dad.”

Almost all of the characters are white. It's a bit of a disappointment as British shows usually have a variety of races, sizes, ages, etc. In one of the episodes they even used the word "transvestite" multiple times. I had expected it to…

This is such a lame rendition of totally wonderful books. Kenneth Branagh needs to give his ego a rest and do something else.

This series is probably acted superbly. Sir Kenneth Branaugh never does a weak role. However, the writers have presented us with stories that are extremely vague and, although the crimes are clever and grisley, their solutions are often so…

I've read and enjoy the books and both TV versions of the Wallander - the Swedish and the BBC Kenny Branagh version. Don't compare them, but enjoy each one separately. They all have something different to offer. Of course the TV series…

I know Henning Mankell's crime fiction is very popular. I tried reading one book but could not get into it. Thought I'd try the DVDs. There is a Swedish Wallander series (SPL has them) and a British Wallander series with Kenneth…

"These stories follow Kurt Wallander, a sensitive but brilliant detective ..." Kenneth Branagh forces himself to look sensitive, but it doesn't work. I've watched the entire Swedish series and enjoyed being outside the English-speaking…

This Swedish based series successfully engrossed me -- it's not every day you come across a detective solving murders in a Volvo wagon with a comical ringtone on his cell phone... if nothing else the premise isn't ordinary. And Kenneth…

The Beeb does it again, excellent, can't-stop-watching productions. We made the mistake of getting these before the first episodes, and we are now watching the first dvd, but it makes little difference really, you can figure it out. The…

I am watching this for a second time. I very much enjoy this series. It is dark and some scenes are very graphic but Wallander is so human, he shows his flaws and so much emotion I love his character. In time I may watch this again.

As brilliant and outstanding as Season One. From the acting (especially the superb Kenneth Branagh), to the directing, the music (haunting and eerie), the scenery (mostly bleak and dreary), the dialogue and character development. And seems…

Amen to HarryBrowne comments. I want to add that i went into this with a bit of trepidation. I didn't have much hope for it and wasn't looking for anything so incredibly involved and wonderfully written. The scenery is amazing, but that is…

Outstanding BBC series based on the Swedish detective. Kenneth Branagh is superb as Wallander. World-weary, introspective and ever so human. Scenery is gorgeous, score is haunting and appropriate to the subject matter. Not drenched in sex…

Appropriate for viewers who have not been 'dumbed down' by American car chase programs/'shoot-em-ups' this series is a treasure.

Three stories by Henning Markell were converted into full-length feature films for the television by BBC. I don't know how they compared to the Swedish versions but stand-alone they are pretty gripping and well-acted.

Having now seen the far superior Swedish version of the series on DVD, I have to say in comparison the British version with Kenneth Branagh lays it a little thick on the existential angst, playing Wallander like some Hamlet running amok.…
