In 1935, thirteen-year-old fledgling writer Briony Tallis and her family live a life of wealth and privilege in their enormous mansion. On the warmest day of the year, the country estate takes on an unsettling hothouse atmosphere, stoking Briony's vivid imagination. Robbie Turner, the educated son of the family's housekeeper, carries a torch for Briony's headstrong older sister Cecilia. He hopes that Cecilia has comparable feelings. All it will take is one spark for this relationship to combust. When it does, Briony - who has a crush on Robbie, is compelled to interfere. She goes so far as to accuse Robbie of a crime he did not commit. Cecilia and Robbie declare their love for each other, but, ultimately, he is arrested. Briony bears false witness and the course of three lives is changed forever. As Briony grow older, she continues to seek forgiveness for her childhood misdeed. Through a terrible and courageous act of imagination, she finds the path to her uncertain atonement, and to an understanding of the power of enduring love.

I didn't like this movie, so I didn't watch all of it.

One of few instances where the film adaptation does justice to the novel it's based on. It's heartbreaking but totally captivating and an overall excellent film.

I have not read the book so I have nothing to compare it to but thought this movie was well done until the ending which totally ruined the whole movie and made it pointless.

This gorgeous period piece set in England just before WWII tells the story of two young lovers whose lives take a tragic turn after an over-imaginative child makes a series of false accusations. Magnificent performances are further enhanced by stunning sets and impeccable cinematography....including an amazing 3-minute single take along a beach strewn with soldiers and the machineries of war. This is truly a filmmaker’s film, and the heartbreaking double twist at the end is sure to make this a cinema classic.

This is one of those movies that prove that life is not always fair. The talent of great actors in this film make it worth watching.

This is by far the best movie adaptation of a really good book that I have ever seen. Normally I avoid the filmed version of books I loved (I'm thinking of you, Mansfield Park..) because I know that the writers will leave out things and distort others, but this is the exception.

Ok, I was going to order this movie, but the book sounds so good, I think I'll read it first. Oh, there is an audio book. Will get that, and read the book while listening to it. (This may sound a little weird, but, if the narrator is a good one, you get a better sense of the characters while listening, and I have found that this improves my pronunciation of words, as while I am an avid reader, I have found that I do not pronounce quite a few words properly!)

Very gripping story. Not surprised by the end as I was somehow anticipating it. Overall, a very nice movie.

I was pleasantly surprised with this movie. The ending was unexpected, but in a good way.

This is a 2007 British romantic film directed by Joe Wright and based on the 2001 novel of the same name by Ian McEwan.
It chronicles a crime and its consequences over the course of six decades, beginning in the 1930s.
The acting of performers is strong and great, its cinematography is brilliant and superb, and Dario Marianelli's score is quite unique and inspiring, but to the viewer who hasn't read the novel, the last part of the film seems to spoil the intense feeling of the middle part and somewhat anti-climatic.

"Dearest Cecilia, the story can resume. The one I had been planning on that evening walk. I can become again the man who once crossed the surrey park at dusk, in my best suit, swaggering on the promise of life. The man who, with the clarity of passion, made love to you in the library. The story can resume. I will return. Find you, love you, marry you and live without shame." - Robbie Turner(James McAvoy)
