In 1993 Marie Gesto disappeared after walking out of a supermarket. Harry Bosch worked the case but couldn't crack it, and the twenty-two-year-old was never found. Now, more than a decade later, with the Gesto file still on his desk, Bosch gets a call from the District Attorney. A man accused of two heinous murders is willing to come clean about several others, including the killing of Marie Gesto. Taking the confession of the man he has sought-and hated-for thirteen years is bad enough. Discovering that he missed a clue back in 1993 that could have stopped nine other murders may just be the straw that breaks Harry Bosch.

It's with this book that I start to define Bosch as a tragic character. His crumbling morality and reckless approach to law "enforcement", ends-justify-the-means -- dissappointing compared to, say, The Black Echo. Where is the flawed but deeply human man from that book??

Of all Connelly's books in the Harry Bosch series, this one, while not one of the best, shows how complex a man Harry is. Dedicated, relentless in the pursuit of a suspect, desperate to obtain justice for the victim and her family, he is nonetheless reckless and dangerous to himself and his partner. You like and respect him, but at the same time you want to slap his head , and tell him to wake up, and be smarter. A complex man if ever there was one. He is his own worst enemy.

A good detective read.

Another great story with some interesting twists and turns as Bosch has to navigate the shark waters of corrupt police and legal officials. I like Bosch's relentless pursuit of justice despite constant criticism.

One of Connelly's top 5 books in my opinion. Good from start to finish!!

One of my favourite authors, certainly not his best but still a good mystery read!

A great read. A new discovery for me. I will now read all the others in the series. Yay - 11 more! A very human detective. Not one of the "great" detective series, but certainly very readable.
