A New York Times bestseller, A Globe and Mail bestseller -- Cornwell's work has been translated into 32 languages across more than 35 countries. She is regarded as one of the top international bestselling authors. Her most recent bestsellers include Port Mortuary, The Scarpetta Factor, and Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper -- Case Closed. Among her earlier works are Postmortem -- the only novel to win five major crime awards in a single year -- and Cruel and Unusual, which won Britain's prestigious Gold Dagger Award for best crime novel of 1993. Dr. Kay Scarpetta herself won the 1999 Sherlock Award for best detective created by an American author. This is Patricia Cornwell's 19th novel to feature forensic pathologist Kay Scarpetta. Determined to find out what happened to her former deputy chief, Jack Fielding, murdered six months earlier, Kay Scarpetta travels to the Georgia Prison for Women, where an inmate has information not only on Fielding but on a string of grisly killings. The years-old murder of an Atlanta family, a young woman on death row, and the inexplicable deaths of homeless people seem unrelated. But Scarpetta discovers compelling connections...

This Scarpetta Book was very good. I have read them all up to this one. Now I am starting the next one in the series. I will say I too have been disappointed with some of the previous books, but starting with Port Mortuary, they have been so much better.

Fans of Patricia Cornwell’s books will not be disappointed with this nineteenth installment of the “Kay Scarpetta” series. The usual cast of characters is back as Scarpetta works to discover the source of the deaths and clear her name. Sit back and invest some time in the characters of this popular medical thriller series.

I love the Scarpetta series. I have read them in order up to Red Mist and I like the fact that when references are made from previous books it is done so that if you have read them it isn't too repetitious but if you haven't, and just picked up a later novel, you're not lost and the story flows.

Some think Cornwell is getting repetitious with her characters and becoming predictable, but I enjoy the familiarity. If a story about a Chief Medical Examiner and the company she keeps and the mysteries and pickles they get into is your thing, I highly recommend any of this series.

Excellent Scarpetta book. Make sure you read the one before this first as this one is the sequel.

Sortof continues where the last installment left off. A bit moody...

I had about given up on Patricia Cornwell before Port Mortuary. Her characters were all so dour humourless and depressed. But Port Mortuary restored some of my interest and Red Mist brings me firmly back into the category of a fan. The pacing is great, the plot too and I actually started to care about all these people again.

Patricia Cornwell over the years falls into a "guilty pleasure" read. I must admit that I rarely read her entire novel (It needs a good edit); however, I read the start as it usually summarizes all the past Scarpetta novels and the last several chapters as it seems to summarize the current novel. If you are a loyal reader, it would be a good read. If you are a new reader of Cornwell, her newer (extremely long) novels can be read out of sequence. If you are a "serious" reader, this is not a good choice.
