Excellent book as always with Verdon. But there's one thing that doesn't make sense. Throughout the book we find that this Peter Pan, or call him whatever you like, is one dangerous killer, untouchable and even invisible, making no mistake. Maybe the author didn't know how to resolve this problem without adding 500 other pages on an already long book. So what does he do? The little guy waits for Gurney to almost catch up with him and then go hides in the most Stephen King-esk of horror show: the circus. Ok, maybe not the circus, but very close to it. I mean, get real. The ferris wheel moving by itself down the fairway? King would be jealous, I'm sure. In the end we see that this monster is only a stupid little imbecile, just waiting for Gurney to kill him. Very weak. He should have slept on it and realized that this made no sense at all. Still four stars for the effort. But for that twisted end, I cannot give him the extra star.

I thought "Think of a Number" was one of the most clever novels I'd read in a long time but sadly, Verdon's books have steadily declined since then.
The premise is always the same. Gurney's asked to take a seemingly impossible case to help fill his time since retirement. His wife gets pissed, seeing this as an excuse to avoid her honey-do list on their rural property.
The other thing that hasn't changed is the author's ability to spring a surprising twist on us near the end. But the distance in-between could benefit from a good editor to clean up wordy passages & repetitive statements. And despite reading all his books, I still have no idea why this couple stays together. Please expand Madeleine's role & make her more than a bit player.

Not sure why the main character's wife stays with him, he is self centered and generally unpleasant. He should redeem himself by building the best chicken coop ever!!

A fast-paced thriller with a great twist at the end and characters who actually grow and evolve. That said, I found that some parts of the book were unnecessarily gory, and that the seemingly endless use of the f-word and some pretty long-winded writing kept me from loving the book as much as previous titles by this author.
