Boone McCallister was interviewed in 1937 for the American Legends Collection, a part of the Federal Writer's Project. Speaking into an Edison Dictaphone, he narrated the events concerning a dangerous cattle drive in Florida back when the state was still largely unsettled. Here is the story of a young man's first cattle drive in 1864 and the legend of David Klee and an encounter with an alligator.

If you like westerns this is a very good read. The setting is different from most - Civil War era Florida, complete with alligators and African American slaves. But Florida was indeed one of the earliest cowboy settings as frontiersmen rounded up the descendants of cattle left by early Spanish colonist that went wild and abundant in the central scrublands. This book is based on real elements of that history and is a well told adventure tale.
