This is a 2001 epic fantasy directed by Peter Jackson based on the first volume of J. R. R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings (1954–1955)."
It is the first instalment in the "Lord of the Rings film series."
"The Lord of the Rings" is an epic fantasy novel.
The story began as a sequel to Tolkien's 1937 fantasy novel "The Hobbit," but eventually developed into a much larger work.
It is one of the best-selling novels ever written, with over 150 million copies sold.
The prologue shows the Dark Lord Sauron in the Second Age attempting to conquer Middle-Earth using his One Ring.
In battle against the Elves and Men, Prince Isildur cuts the Ring from Sauron's hand, destroying his physical form and vanquishing his army.
However, Sauron's "life force" is bound to the Ring, allowing him to survive while the Ring remains.
Isildur, corrupted by the Ring's power, refuses to destroy it.
When Isildur is killed by Orcs, the Ring is lost in a river for 2,500 years.
The Ring is found by Smeagol (or Gollum, as he is later called), who possesses it for 500 years until it is found by the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins in the tunnels of the Misty Mountains.
The rest of the story, however, is so boring that I quit halfway through.

In the theatre years ago, I squealed a little bit when we first see Strider in the tavern, because I knew right away it was him, he looked just like I always imagined (and how often does THAT happen? never). The movie has him exactly right. It makes up for everything else (I'm looking at you, elf girl -- you're alright, but what are you doing taking up valuable time in this story?).

Just as good the second time. If it wasn't overdue, I'd keep it and watch once more.
