Depressing to watch, but this really is a story that needed telling. It is a shame how Abdul was treated.

This was a good movie, and a great story finally told, but it was also really sad. Worth watching, but just sad what happened to Abdul, sad how lonely the queen was and how out of touch with what was happening in India... just sad!

Rated 10/10. I thought this was well made. Good performances throughout.

This film interested me enough to do some searches on Queen Victoria and the Abdul character. Very intriguing!

Fine film indeed. Good acting and touching story based "mostly" on true events.
Tells the story of a 24-yr-old jail clerk assistant from Agra, India, being transferred into a personal attendant to the Empress of India, Queen of England, Victoria, for her Golden Jubilee. The film covers that period, of introduction, to becoming a close confidant, from 1887 up until her death in 1901.
Queen Victoria's successor, King Edward VII, her eldest son, deported Abdul Karim, along with his mother and wife after burning all of the personal belongings from his place of residence.
King Edward VII, was succeeded by King George V, in 1910, a year after Abdul had died.
Interesting biographical information, following the film. I had never heard of this part of Queen Victoria's history before.
Recommended.

This film was an unexpected pleasure. The cinematography and costumes are beautiful and Judi Dench as Queen Victoria is outstanding. The film was based on a true story about Queen Victoria's unexpected relationship and friendship with a servant from India during her twilight years. The film had some good gentle humour and was very engaging. I could understand why the elderly queen, whose life had become so humdrum, routine and lonely, could become so infatuated by a man who was so different and became such a breath of fresh air in her life. The fact that Abdul was almost erased from history made the story more interesting.

This movie demonstrates amply how you can change what the viewer sees by changing the focus of the camera. Also, wouldn't it be nice if the big picture were as nice as individual people being kind to each other? Still, it was remarkably enjoyable, setting aside the brutality of colonial history. Judi Dench is a work of art in herself, as always. Worth seeing.

Directed by Stephen Frears in 2017 based on the book of same name by Shrabani Basu, this British docudrama dipicts the unusual friendship between Queen Victoria and her Indian Muslim servant Abdul Karim.
Abdul Karim (1863 – April 1909), known as "the Munshi", served the queen during the final fifteen years of her reign, gaining her maternal affection over that time.
The close platonic relationship between Karim and the Queen led to friction within the Royal Household, the other members of which felt themselves to be superior to him.
The Queen insisted on taking Karim with her on her travels, which caused arguments between her and her other attendants.
It is an unbelievably hilarious, extraordinarily amusing and profoundly engaging drama you wouldn't want to miss.

Great costumes and scenery; and also the acting. Kinda hard to watch all the pettiness going on with the royals, but maybe it was that way.. A sorry lot they were. Scenery is absolutely stunning.

Charming! All of the performances were excellent, and Eddie Izzard was a delightful surprise as "Bertie."

***SPOILER ALERT***
Most controversial scene part 1 of 2:

Mother, we have to see you. Alone.
-I'm in the middle of my Urdu lesson.
Mother, we come with very important news of a highly personal matter.
-I've nothing to hide from Abdul.
Please, Your Majesty. Your Majesty... I'm afraid our news concerns the Munshi. We have proof beyond any doubt that Abdul Karim is a low-born impostor, Your Majesty.
-The Munshi is from a noble family and a long line of teachers.
No, I'm afraid he was a mere clerk in a common jail. My own son has sent word from India and has actually spoken to his immediate superior. His family are completely uneducated. His father is a lowly apothecary. // The Munshi never even went to school, Mother. The man's a complete fraud. And here he is, overlooking the boxes. // I'm afraid it's true, Your Majesty. Abdul and his father are completely common. We have prepared a dossier.

Most controversial scene part 2 of 2:

-You despicable toads! Racialists! Spying? Dossier? Picking on a poor defenseless Indian? Of course he doesn't have qualifications. They do things completely differently out there.
Don't you see, Mama? He's using his position for his own gain.
-And how does that make him any different from any of you? How dare you look down on Abdul? How dare you defame his poor father? Bertie, I'm ashamed that you're part of all this. Abdul is a loyal, wise, sympathetic human being, who has raised himself on his own merits. … It has become apparent that in order to get any respect from the Household, one needs to be formally recognized. In which case, Abdul. I intend to give you a knighthood in the next honors list.
Enough! This is absurd! We cannot protect you from this any further. The man is riddled with gonorrhea!
-Gonorrhea? SIR HENRY:
Yes. Your Majesty.
-Well, you are a doctor. Why don't you treat him? Now get out of my sight, all of you!
