Brave, literate, beautifully researched novel on a rare topic: the saints of the early Celtic Church and the Synod of Whitby. For the most part, the book's length is well justified--except for the endless vacillations of St. Bega on the kind of life she wants to lead, which quickly become annoying and alienate the reader from her character.
