"When a wealthy widow is murdered, Mrs. Jeffries investigates what happens when money can't buy your life in this all- new installment in the beloved Victorian Mystery series. Margaret Starling wasn't the sort of woman anyone expected to be murdered. She was on the advisory board of the London Angel Alms Society, an active member of St. Peter's Church and, best of all, she was always willing to lend a hand to a friend or neighbor in need of advice. So when Margaret winds up dead, the town is shocked. As they dig deeper into the crime, Mrs. Jeffries and Inspector Witherspoon begin to wonder how well-liked Margaret really was. Even though it's Christmas, Mrs. Jeffries and Inspector Witherspoon know it's their duty to make sure justice is served..."--

Mrs. Goodge, the cook, has a feeling that Inspector Witherspoon's staff is going to be challenged by a murder right before Christmas, and sure enough it happens. Inspector Witherspoon is called to investigate the murder, which is in slimy Inspector Nivens' district. So all involved are not working in their own patch, but Mrs. Jeffries' team of sleuths manage to keep undercover, just barely, and funnel tips and clues to Constable Barnes while Mrs. Jeffries steers the inspector the right way each night over glasses of sherry. As all the other books indicate, he is pretty clueless, but tries to improve and this time stands up to Nivens.

Although wealthy Mrs. Starling is lured outside and bashed over the head when all her staff are on a Christmas outing, the Jeffries team, as well as Witherspoon and Barnes, at first concentrate on who disliked Mrs. Starling (a long list). But finally Mrs. Jeffries decides they need to follow the money, which is what this reader thought all along.

Phyllis, Wiggins and Ruth have some interesting encounters. And there is a light-fingered vicar who got busted because he was too familiar with some of his parishioners in his previous (richer) parish, and there's a lawyer with a lisp. LIttle Amanda flirts with a delivery boy who brings a note to Smythe.
