A riveting new novel from New York Times bestselling and Edgar Award-winning author C. J. Box.

The ties that bind can burn you.

Former sheriff's investigator Cassie Dewell is trying to start her life over as in private practice. She's her own boss and answers to no one, and that's just the way she likes it after the past few tumultuous years. All that certainty changes when an old friend calls in a favor: she wants Cassie to help exonerate a man accused of assaulting a young woman from an influential family.

Against her own better judgment, Cassie agrees. But out by the Bitterroot Mountains of Montana, twisted family loyalty runs as deep as the ties to the land, and there's always something more to the story. The Kleinsassers have ruled this part of Montana for decades, and the Iron Cross Ranch is their stronghold. They want to see Blake Kleinsasser, the black sheep of the family, put away forever for the assault. As Cassie attempts to uncover the truth, she must fight against a family whose roots are tangled and deadly--as well as the ghosts of her own past that threaten to bring her down.

With The Bitterroots , master storyteller C. J. Box delivers another searing novel of loyalty, lies, and lethal retribution.

This was a pretty good read. Somewhat predictable but still had lots of twists and turns.
It was up to the usual CJ Box standards which means it was entertaining.

While not a Joe Pickett novel, it is a very good read. Without the burden of keeping readers up on the present and past of so many characters from the lengthy series of Pickett lore, the author is free to tell a largely unencumbered tale of Cassie Sewell. The plot is devious, although it has some predictability, and the action is fast paced. While a male writing from a female point of view is always suspect, it seemed to work for me. I look forward to reading more of this character, her life and her cases.

We are big C. J. Box fans, but this book does not live up to his writing ability. "The Bitterroots" was a BITTER disappointment!

C. J. Box's THE BITTERROOTS is a very entertaining read with lots of action and plenty of twists and turns. This is NOT, however, JOE PICKETT novel. I am not sure if this will be a stand-alone novel, or the start of a series with a (somewhat) new character, Cassie Dewell - think back to the story about a twisted, long-distant trucker that Dewell helped bring down. This novel is one in which a very dysfunctional family is very powerful in its own community to the extent that they can do just about whatever they want and get away with it - even to discredit one of their own. Police corruption, country living and violence galore. I did not see the ending coming. Have fun with another great read by Box.

As a former law enforcement officer, Cassie doesn’t want to work for a defense attorney. Especially on a case where a man has been arrested for raping his 15-year-old niece. However, Rachel assures Cassie she doesn’t have to dig up exculpatory evidence, but just to follow the trail where it leads. "Assure me that there are no holes in the case," the lawyer says, "and I'll talk my client into a plea deal." Once in Lochsa County, however, Cassie finds herself hitting brick wall after brick wall in her investigation. She can't figure out why everyone in town is taking the trouble to thwart the investigation of a case that is as rock-solid as this one’s supposed to be. Cassie isn’t one to back down, and there are plenty of twists and turns leading to the very end!
