I feel like it's hard to give this book a rating or say that I enjoyed it because like everyone else has said, it's a very difficult read. This book is like watching a car crash; you don't want to look away but it's horrible to see. That being said, it's very well written and researched and my heart aches for the victims in this case. At points it's hard to remember that this story isn't just fiction.

This has to be one of the most horrific books I have ever read. It was very disturbing that a mom could do these terrible things to her children. Then mix in a few people who came to live under their roof. The torture and unbelievable things she could do was heart wrenching. The children were young enough to be brainwashed that this was the norm. Then to involve them in the horrendous acts!! Fear of severe punishment and their lives kept them silent until adulthood.

This book was VERY VERY difficult to read. It's so sad and depressing. What these people went through with their abuse is unbelievable. I stopped and started the book several times as it was so horrible to read what the "mother" did to her children and friends. JUST AWFUL !!!!!!

This book shook me to my very inner core. I finished reading it a week ago and I still think about the horrific abuse these three sisters and the people that "Shelly" took in under her roof, were subjected to. This evil woman preyed on the weaknesses of her children searching for love in their mother who just isn't capable. She used manipulation and humiliation as well as physical and emotional abuse to control everyone in her life. The woman and gentleman that she took in to "help" slowly declined as everyone around watched them deteriorate, yet nothing was done. This woman was a master manipulator and psychopath to the fullest extent. The girls are lucky to be able to live semi-normal lives as described in the beginning of the novel. Although I am confident without a single doubt that it doesn't go without tortured memories and psychological damage from their childhood and early adulthood. I as well as others almost stopped reading multiple times because of the graphic abuse. However If I start reading a book I have to finish so I just passed through some of the gut wrenching details with a tear in my eye for the poor souls. Pay attention to your surroundings. Children go through this and sometimes it can be stopped just by sticking your neck out. You may save a life!

As others have stated, this is a well written book but very difficult to read of abuse. Almost stopped reading it at least three times and do not know that I would recommend it to anyone for that reason.

While this is well written and researched, I could not finish due to the graphic descriptions of the brutal psychological and physical abuse. As a retired Operating Room RN, I can tolerate a lot, but this was too much even for me.

Wow! I could not put this book down! Just a warning that it's very bloody and gory and lots of scenes of abuse. It's just incredible what these poor little sisters went through. You won't be able to tear your eyes away.
