Sweet and heartfelt, without being overly sappy, a family comes together to support an ailing matriarch with a seemingly terminal diagnosis. There's genuine affection and love between the family members as they discuss many of the differences between the Western and Eastern cultures. The end credits (at least for me) put a pleasant button on the end of a thought-provoking film about life and family.

This was such a wonderful film, both heart breaking and heart warming, based on a true event in the director's family. *** Please be sure to keep watching after the credits begin rolling, as it is only then when you'll see the true ending of the film. ***

A nice family story. Interesting philosophy the Chinese have regarding mortal illness. If you think about, it's not a bad idea.

Interesting and different and suitable for all ages.
However, there are some issues with the plot that really bothered me ("plot holes", logic, and other inconsistencies).
The acting is good, the characters are lovable, etc.
At moments, the movie really connected emotionally with the audience.
Still, there are issues with the plot, the treatment, and the ending, etc. that I would like to see fixed.
3 solid stars.

What was the hype about? Acting was fine but honestly the movie was nothing special.

Was looking forward to this after all the good reviews but unfortunately I found this film to be very boring...very predictable...and very drab. I like the premise but after about 30 minutes nothing really happens and its all about hiding the truth. I understand the chinese culture somewhat and appreciate the effort to tell this story but as a movie it does not grab or entertain enough. I think it would make a much better novel.

An unassuming little masterpiece!

Wonderful movie about a Chinese family whose members include one family in the US and one family in China, that reunites in China ostensibly for a wedding, but really because the mother/grandmother is dying of cancer, but under Chinese custom, they can't and won't tell her. Great performances, especially by Awkafina and Shuzhen Zhao.

A sweet story about a family coming to terms with their matriarch's cancer diagnosis, and the debate about whether or not to tell her. The relationship between the grandmother and her granddaughter is especially touching. Highly recommended.

After all the hype about this film, I was very disappointed.

Only three quotes in IMDb this morning. Expect many more in the near future. Here is the "On the roof" joke:

So one day the wife goes out of town. And when she returns, the husband says... honey, the cat is dead. And she says "How can you tell me so abruptly like this?" You have to ease me into bad news." Like honey... the cat, he got on the roof.

So... now... a few months later the wife goes out of town again. And she returns, and the husband greets her again. But this time he learned his lesson. And as the wife comes through the door he says, "Honey, your mom, she got on the roof."
