Mary Lennox is a prickly and unloved ten-year-old girl, born in India to wealthy British parents. When they suddenly die, she is sent back to England to live with her uncle. There, she begins to uncover many family secrets, particularly after meeting her sickly cousin Colin, who has been shut away in a wing of the house. Together, these two damaged, slightly misfit children heal each other through their discovery of a wondrous secret garden.

this most recent adaptation of a classic book features colin firth and julie waters. there is some artistic license: expected characters omitted, unexpected diversity in the post-war yorkshires, and some added to puzzling effect. the garden is now football pitch sized rather than the expected intimate space.
this matters only if you've read the book, the children don't do anything to the garden, which is supposed to be the whole point.
not sure who the intended target audience is, do children still like this sort of story? as a grownup i enjoyed the costuming and set decoration.
