The Confessor is the third entry in Silva’s Gabriel Allon series and deals with the culpability of the Roman Catholic Church in the Holocaust. The novel posits greater collusion between the Vatican and Nazi Germany than has been documented historically. It makes for an engrossing story with twists and turns along the way. I listened to the abridged audio version and my only complaint was that the “soft brogue” of Scottish journalist sounded Irish to me. Also, although it was abridged skilfully, I couldn’t help feeling that I was missing something. The climax is somewhat unsatisfactory but the denouement wraps everything up. In a final twist the Confessor is not who the reader thinks he is.
