We've all suffered through bad vacations- tourist traps, endless lines, rundown hotels, and the worst airports on earth. Before you book your next trip, get all of the facts--that "idyllic" beachfront hotel could really be one of the world's hellholes. In this follow-up to his New York Times bestseller, The Complete Travel Detective Bible, Peter Greenberg shares his experiences and hard-won knowledge of where not to go and why, so you can make sure your big vacation isn't to a dismal destination. From dangerous roads, crime-ridden cities, and countries overrun with disease to depressing destinations, polluted beaches, and places that (literally) stink, the ultimate travel expert leaves no stone unturned, no garbage heap unexplored, to list the locations you should forget even exist. Backed up by information he has been compiling for years, Don't Go There! unapologetically exposes misrepresented resorts, corrupt countries, and cringe-worthy cruise ships so that travelers can confidently pack their bags and avoid vacation tragedy.

This isn't a book of "Don't-Go" places like Afghanistan, Cuba, North Korea, etc. Instead, it's a book about place with the worst traffic, dirtiest cities, stinkiest places, worst airlines, worst roads, etc. Yes, it does focus on the USA, but it does go international somewhat. Fun to skim through. Who knows? You might just find it interesting.

A complete waste of time! Handy if you only want to travel in the US but the rest of the world was relegated to a few pages at the end of each chapter, sometimes. Surely there must be better books on this subject elsewhere.

Don’t Go There: The Travel Detective’s Essential Guide to the Must-Miss Places of the World --- by Peter Greenberg. You read all those nice, slick paper travel books and magazines with their “come see us” come-ons. And you believe them. But have you ever considered that they may be a cover or a scamp for something quite grotesque? Well, Greenberg has it all figured out: there are some hotels you simply don’t want to stay at; some airlines you’d just as soon never have heard of; some cruise line maladies you’d never even though about. The book can be read from stem to stern or, equally legitimately, from travel horror story to travel horror story. The book is written in a funny style which makes it possible to accept the tales he enumerates without actually throwing up. He features such tidbits as: dirtiest hotels (Miami International Airport Hotel); Disease Capitals of the World (Ukraine: highest per 1,000 of population rate); World’s Scariest Runways (Tioman Island, Malaysia): the list goes on. The paper on which it’s printed is pulp but the “heads-up” is pithy. Read this before you plan your next itinerary. You may want to change your travel plans accordingly. Or perhaps unpack you suitcase entirely.

Sort of a stupid idea for a book. Most of the places mentioned are places people normally wouldn't think of to visit in the first place. People only visit because there is a friend or family member living there.
