John Wells goes undercover in Saudi Arabia in a cutting-edge novel of modern suspense from the #1 New York Times -bestselling author.

John Wells may have left the CIA, but it hasn't left him. A mysterious call brings a surprise meeting with the aged monarch of Saudi Arabia, King Abdullah. "My kingdom is on a precipice," he tells Wells. "Powerful factions are plotting against me, and my own family is in danger. I don't know who I can trust, but I'm told I can trust you."

Reluctantly, and with the secret blessing of the CIA, Wells goes undercover; but the more he learns, the more complicated things become, and soon he, too, is unsure whom to trust, in Saudi Arabia or Washington. One thing, however, is clear: If the conspirators prevail, it will mean more than the fall of a monarch-it may be the beginning of the final conflagration between America and Islam.

Reading the ghost war helped recognize some of the characters in the Secret soldier. The culmination of Jennifer Exley’s relationship with John Wells became clear. Though disillusioning, her reasoning was convincing. Comparisons between the two women (Anne and Jennifer) is easy to envisage. While Exley had class, the latter only utilizes Wells to satisfy her own desires and is inclined to protect herself. Regardless of John Well's character, he does not deserve someone like Anne - he deserves better. A remake of the novel (by recreating Jennifer’s role) should make the series more interesting. Conclusively, the story was based on political power struggle and got boring without providing any enthusiasm or challenge for the reader.

It is difficult for a westerner especially a non-Moslem to write about the Middle East especially Saudi Arabia. Berenson gives it a try but only an Arab can think like an Arab. The action moves well if the plot doesn't. The infighting in the House of Saud is legendary so anything written actually is possible, still it is best for Westerners to avoid dipping into this dangerous mess unless we use only our perspective, I lived there for 7 years and know nothing about an Arab.

actually conveys some of the conflicts within the Wahabist version of Islam, not only with the Quran; but also the Saud Royal Family.

Following the events in The Midnight House, John Wells has left the CIA but is hired by the King of Saudi Arabia for a special assignment. Mayhem and death follow as the Americans and the Saudis are both the targets of a terrorist plot. The story is a return to form following the diversion of The Midnight House. Berenson’s series is a cut above the writing of the late Vince Flynn and Brad Thor. Berenson has greater insight into the issues related to the Middle East. Having created John Wells as a Muslim makes the inevitable conflicts more personal than simple revenge or service to country. The Secret Soldier is as thought-provoking as any current spy thriller.

I enjoyed this book. Lots of action and interesting info about the Saudis and their religion. Hope there is another book in series.
