I will never look at truck stops the same way. Marvelous novel about a serial killer, the Lizard King, who is a long haul truck driver. The sisters from Back of the Beyond are back, as they drive to meet Justin , Cody Hoyt's son for Thanksgiving. Cody Hoyt is his usual hot mess of a ruthless cop who gets pulled into the girls disappearance by his son's request. I love Cody, and like Cassie his new partner who is slowly learning that Cody's rules are hard truths. I am so happy I found this new series, as I have read all the Longmire novels. I plan to start on the other books of CJ Box. Who was it who said don't be afraid to kill your darlings? I know Agatha Christie was quite ruthless IMO, and CJ Box has no problem either it seems.

Didnt like this book at all. I was sad to see Cody die and the sadistic perversion of the 3 men made me feel sick because those kidnappings and eventual deaths actually happen. Not sure I will read anymore.

The Highway is (primarily) about a long haul truck driver/serial killer, and we listened on a road trip to Ohio. As the novel got rolling, I was staring up at every semi we passed with a new perspective! The reality of the story was underlined by a wall covered in missing person posters, all teen/early 20's girls, in a Nebraska gas station. It didn't help to google "long haul trucker serial killer" along the way...

The Cassie Dewall series seems darker and grittier than the other C.J. Box books - I'm not sure exactly why. It may be that the murders/murder scenarios are darker. It seem like the Joe Pickett series, there's usually a reason - someone got shoved off their land, someone's mad about losing out, someone's covering up another crime, etc. In this book, it seems like Box is exploring more of the predatory, dark side of human nature.

If you're road tripping and decide to traumatize yourself with The Highway, make sure you check out Badlands, as well, since certain elements of this book don't wrap up by the end. That was our listen on the ride home...

Also, I love that he dedicated this book to his daughters. I thought my Dad's cautionary tales were traumatizing, but C.J. Box takes the prize on this one!

Full of factual errors. These could have been avoided with manageable changes to the storyline . Thankfully he has improved both style and substance with his later books.

A creepy story, especially if you are listening to it while driving

Not "grisly" as some below proclaim. I prefer his Pickett novels but this is his second in the "King" vein, and he leaves an obvious opening for at least one more in this series. He kept me engaged and I look forward to his next tale.

At little slow in the middle but pretty good

This is the second book I've read by Box. A disappointing twist part-way through and an unsatisfactory ending.

Has to be the best C. J. Box book I've ever read! With a shocking plot twist partway thru, it was fast-paced, well-written & a complete revelation! I read it in two days, it was THAT good!!

CJ Bix Fans - Don't bother with this one

Not only not CJ's best works, it is at the absolute bottom IMHO

Maybe it's because he is trying to get into the head of a criminal low-life rather than an LEO, or maybe he was rushed to meet a deadline. Either way the pace was horrible, there were WTF moments every couple of pages

The King trys to stay out of WA, OR and CA, yet one anchor of his circuit is Yakima WA?

What mother would let two teen age girls go on an Interstate trip - alone - without insisting that the car had a checkup first?

"She crossed her arms ove her breasts" Where else would she cross them? Behind her back?

and on, and on, and on
