The 25th anniversary of Love & Rockets continues with the second of three volumes collecting the adventures of the spunky Maggie, her annoying best friend and sometime lover Hopey and their circle of friends. Having abandoned the sci-fi trappings of the earliest Love & Rockets stories, Hernandez refined his approach, settling on the more naturalistic environment of the fictional Los Angeles barrio, Hoppers, and the lives of the young Mexican-Americans and punk rockers who live there.

In these stories, Jamie Hernandez has given up on the sci-fi elements found in the first collect of "Maggie" stories. and instead focuses of Maggie, her friends and the trouble they get themselves into.

While the stories and characters didn't resonate with me like those of his brother's (in the Palomar stories), they are still important to comic history.

Jamie explored the lives of hispanic, 20-something americans in a time when everyone else was still focusing on men in tights hiting each other. These stories still stand as testement to 'Indie' and 'alternative' comics. They are an alternative to those superheroes who have no depth.

Jamie also displays his crisp pen and ink style as well as his figure drawings. It's also really nice to see female 'comic book characters' with real bodies.
