Oh, how disappointed I am in WHAT LIES BENEATH. There's a good movie buried in there. Unfortunately, it's buried deep. Instead of being a psychological drama or even simply a run-of-the-mill thriller, it falls victim to a lot of spooky hooey and choreographed jump scares. Editing and a few rewrites were necessary to fix this film. Parts of the story, such as the car accident leading to the protagonist's memory loss and the protagonist's former brilliance as a musician, could have been tied together in a way that held more significance. For example, as the protagonist's memory came back to her bit by bit, she could have been able to play again. I don't want to ruin anything for those who do want to see this film, but I suggest your time is best spent elsewhere. As much as I adore Michele Pfeiffer, WHAT LIES BENEATH was such a bust. Even the last few thrilling minutes of the film were plagued with ridiculous resolutions that injured the film even after it was damaged.
