The first wave was boredom, as Cassie throws an immature hissy fit at her dad. The second wave was nausea, as Cassie argues with her best friend about having sex with her long-time crush, Ben. The third wave was indifference, as Cassie gets creeped out by unwanted attention from stock loser Crisco. The fourth wave was eye-rolling incredulity as Cassie argues incessantly with new love interest Evan. The fifth wave was … well, I have no idea, as I gave up on this awfully-written, trite and pointless book. The dystopic alien invasion premise of the story had so much promise, but it got bogged down in a morass of meandering narrative, sodden characters, and wooden dialogue. Even by YA fiction standards, this book was amateurish and clichéd.
