Pompeii was one of the largest cities of the Roman Empire, but on Aug. 24, AD 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted, burying the city and many of its inhabitants. Hundreds of years later, archaeologists began to unearth Pompeii, finding the buildings, jewelry and other treasures they had expected, but also the imprints of dead Pompeiians, captured in their last moments.
