Followers of DA will know that screenwriter Julian Fellowes ran out of creative steam half way through the series. This forelock-tugging, retro-porn extravaganza shows he has not recovered. His story line throws many balls into the air, each one sillier and more predictable than the next. Isobel and the dowager countess are in form as they trade acerbic barbs, but too much of the dialogue is cloying and, towards the end, positively cringe-inducing. The only nice touch is the budding romance between Tom Branson, that poor excuse for an Irishman, and a sweet Tuppence Middleton, whose impending good fortune will, we are to hope, finally bring Tom his own broad acres. Watch it for the grand old crew and the clothing, but that's all you are going to get. And if you are a monarchist, watch out. These two hours of bowing and scraping will turn you into a confirmed republican.
