While the violence in this movie is brutal, it is not gratuitous and could have been much, much worse. What I found especially riveting in this movie was the relationships and the quiet moments that revealed character, like when Toby goes to see his kids for the first time in a year or when the 2 Texas Rangers are talking in the motel room. It's rare for a Hollywood film to not have a happy ending where love triumphs and the good guys win. Yes, the Texas Rangers do their job, but they don't "win." The bank robbers don't "win" either. But Toby comes close. What price, conscience? It was a surprise to me, while watching the special features, to learn that Toby was the main character. The way the characters are presented in the story, there's no one character that stands out, but like "Slaughterhouse Five," there is a character that drives the story and that's Toby and his need to pay off his debt to keep the farm. All the acting performances were superb. The tone of this film is of desperation in the face of poverty and the desire to climb out of that hole. The last scene is a stunner. I'd recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys thoughtful human drama.
